A century ago five women disappeared from an island off of Vermont. Rumors say those women were witches/mediums, primarily due to a diary that was found, written by one of the women - Daisy Rue. According to Daisy’s diary, the other women began to disappear one by one after a seance they performed, until Daisy herself disappeared. One hundred years later, our main character Marin Keane lands a role in a movie based on the disappearances on New Avalon. The catch? Her and her costars are asked to recreate what happened - including dressing in period attire, sleeping in the original cabins, and recreating the seances. Things start to go sideways when the five women and the director are stuck on the island, following an illness of a crewmember.
The women start to disappear one by one. Is it the work of an actress who was removed from the film previously? Someone else trying to derail the movie? Or, is it something supernatural that escaped during their seance?
I’ve read all of Riley Sager’s novels and this is definitely one of my favorites. I could never have guessed how he would wrap everything up for the ending. If you’ve read any of Sager’s other novels, you know he loves to have readers question - is it supernatural, or real life? This story had me guessing until the very end.
